LOS ANGELES, Oct. 15 (UPI) -- USC running back Stafon Johnson is out of the hospital after delicate and intricate throat surgery in late September.
He is wearing a small breathing tube in his throat, and can't swallow or talk.
His larynx was realigned and doctors are hopeful he will be able to speak again.
Johnson, a 5-foot-11, 210-pound senior from Compton, Calif., was injured in a freak accident Sept. 28 when a 275-pound barbell slipped from his hand while he was weight-lifting and crushed his throat.
One of his surgeons at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, Dr. Ryan F. Osborne, said Johnson will continue to rest at home and be managed on an outpatient basis.
He will undergo rehabilitation related to swallowing, breathing and speech.
"He has made extremely remarkable progress at this preliminary stage (and) we're very optimistic for his long-term prognosis," Osborne said Wednesday.
"This is not the end of anything," Johnson said in a statement read by his uncle, Kregg Anderson.
