DETROIT, Oct. 15 (UPI) -- Nicklas Lidstrom reached 1,000 points for his career with two assists Thursday, pacing Detroit to a 5-2 decision over Los Angeles.

Lidstrom, a six-time winner of the Norris Trophy, reached the 1,000-point mark when he assisted on a goal by Henrik Zetterberg 3:24 into the third period. He is the eighth defenseman in NHL history to produce 1,000 points in a career -- joining a group that includes Ray Bourque, Phil Housley and Denis Potvin.

Detroit won for the third time in four games. Chris Osgood made 24 saves to get the victory.

The goal by Zetterberg gave Detroit a 3-1 lead, but Los Angeles closed to within one with 8:03 remaining when Justin Williams bounced a shot off the post and into the net.

Kirk Maltby restored the two-goal advantage with 5:17 to play on a slap shot and Brian Rafalski added an empty-net goal with 7 seconds remaining.

Lidstrom has 229 goals and 771 assists over 1,336 games in 18 seasons. He has spent his entire career with Detroit.
