SANDY, Utah, Oct. 15 (UPI) -- Andy Williams broke a tie in the 80th minute Wednesday and Real Salt Lake improved its playoff chances by downing New York 2-0.
Salt Lake (10-11-7) moved past Toronto, D.C. United and FC Dallas with the victory and its 37 points leaves it just one point behind New England for the final MLS post-season berth.
New York, owner of the worst record in the league, has won just four times in 29 games.
The breakthrough Salt Lake goal came on a counterattack after New York had produced two scoring chances. Robbie Findley, who like Williams had been substituted into the game in the second half, broke free down the right side and eventually lofted a cross to Williams, who volleyed the ball past goaltender Danny Cepero for his second score of the year.
Fabian Espindola added a goal in the closing moments, sidestepping a defender in the box and driving a shot into the right, top corner of the net.
Nick Rimando had to make just one save to collect the shutout.
