SHANGHAI, Oct. 14 (UPI) -- Seeded players Juan Martin del Potro and Tommy Haas both withdrew Wednesday from the $5.3 million Shanghai ATP Masters tournament due to injuries.
Del Potro, seeded third, cited a right wrist problem as he stopped his match against Jurgen Melzer with Melzer ahead 7-5, 2-1 in a second-round battle. The No. 15-seeded Haas dropped the first set to Rainer Schuettler 6-4 and then retired because of a shoulder injury.
Top-seeded Rafael Nadal took more than two hours to get through a 6-2, 6-7 (4-7), 6-4 win over James Blake to reach the third round. He'll next go against 14th-seeded Tommy Robredo, whose 4-6, 7-6 (12-10), 6-4 win over Florida Mayer took nearly as long as Nadal's match.
Novak Djokovic, seeded second, had an easier time in a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Fabio Fognini. His third-round foe will be Schuettler.
Fifth-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga took out Shao-Xuan Zeng 6-3, 6-3 in 61 minutes to win a third-round shot at No. 9-seeded Robin Soderling. Soderling advanced 6-4, 7-5 over Nicolas Almagro.
Ivan Ljubicic ousted No. 7-seeded Fernando Verdasco 6-4, 7-6 (10-8) and Feliciano Lopez upset No. 16-seeded David Ferrer 4-6, 7-5, 6-1 but eighth-seeded Gilles Simon breezed through a 6-3, 6-4 win over Viktor Troicki; 11th-seeded Gael Monfils rallied to top Lleyton Hewitt 4-6, 6-4, 6-2; and Tomas Berdych came from behind to defeat Marat Safin 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.
