SHANGHAI, Oct. 13 (UPI) -- Fourth-seeded Andy Roddick withdrew from his second-round match Tuesday at the $5.3 million Shanghai ATP Masters tournament because of a knee injury.

Roddick was ahead of Stanislas Wawrinka 4-3 in the first set when he injured his left knee while chasing a Wawrinka backhand. He immediately went to his court-side chair and ended the match shortly after that.

"It was enough to make me stop a tennis match … beyond that I don't know (the injury's extent). That's not my profession," Roddick said. Roddick's year is best marked by the epic final at Wimbledon against Roger Federer but he is 9-7 in matches since then.

No. 6-seeded Nikolay Davydenko made quick work of Igor Kunitsyn for a 6-4, 6-2 win in his second-rounder Tuesday. Also 10th-seeded Fernando Gonzalez stopped Thomaz Bellucci 6-3, 6-4 and No. 13-seeded Radek Stepanek beat Andreas Beck in second-round matches.

Ninth-seeded Robin Soderling was a 6-3, 6-4 winner over Victor Hanescu; 11th-seeded Gael Monfils beat Paul-Henri Mathieu 6-2, 6-2; and No. 15-seeded Tommy Haas topped Benjamin Becker 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 but 12th-seeded Marin Cilic was upset by Tomas Berdych 7-6 (10-8), 3-6, 6-4 in first-round matches involving seeded players.

Other first-round winners Tuesday were: Lleyton Hewitt, Nicolas Almagro, Viktor Troicki, Ivan Ljubicic and Jurgen Melzer.
