SHANGHAI, Oct. 12 (UPI) -- Fernando Gonzalez of Chile and Marat Safin of Russia were among Monday's opening-round winners at the $5.25 million Shanghai ATP Masters.
Gonzalez, the 10th seed, was tied with Mischa Zverev 7-5, 6-7 (0-7), 2-2 when the German retired with a right wrist injury early in the third set.
Safin, a wild card and former world No. 1 playing his last professional event in China, beat Chinese wild card Mao-Xin Gong 6-4, 6-4. The 29-year-old Safin will retire from the ATP World Tour at the end of this season.
Also Monday, 13th-seeded Czech Radek Stepanek beat former top-ranked Spaniard Juan Carlos Ferrero 6-3, 6-0; 14th-seeded Spaniard Tommy Robredo defeated French qualifier Michael Llodra 6-1, 6-4; and 16-th seeded Spaniard David Ferrer beat Frenchman Richard Gasquet 6-4, 6-3.
This inaugural event closes out a three-week Asian swing on the ATP. The winner will take home $616,500.
