Golf, rugby added to Olympics lineup

COPENHAGEN, Denmark, Oct. 9 (UPI) -- Golf and rugby were added to the lineup for the 2016 and 2020 Summer Games in an International Olympics Committee vote in Denmark Friday.

Golf will be in the Olympics for the first time since 1904 when Canada's George Lyon took the gold medal. The 1900 Games also had golf and the gold was taken by American Charles Sands, who won silver in 1904.

American Margaret Ives Abbott won the 1900 women's golf competition. There was no women's golf at the 1904 Olympics.

The IOC voted to institute a 72-hole tournament in both men's and women's divisions in 2016 and 2020.

"This is great for golf and we hope to be of great benefit to the Olympic Games as well," said Peter Dawson, secretary-general of the International Golf Federation.

World No. 1 Tiger Woods said in August: "We're long overdue to have (golf) in the Olympics.

Rugby was contested in four previous Olympics, the last time in 1924 when the United States took the gold medal.

Rather than traditional 15-person teams, the IOC approved a modified 7-on-7 version of rugby for its competition.

"I am so delighted and proud," said International Rugby Board President Bernard Lapasset.

Seven sports were under consideration for inclusion in the 2016 and 2020 Games. Baseball, karate, roller sports, softball and squash didn't win approval to be added to the sports roster.

The 2016 Summer Games will be in Rio de Janeiro. The site of the 2020 Games hasn't been determined.

Phillies decide to start Pedro in Game 3

DENVER, Oct. 9 (UPI) -- Pedro Martinez, who joined the Philadelphia Phillies in mid-season, will be their starting pitcher in Game 3 of National League Division Series.

Philadelphia Manager Charlie Manual had considered starting Joe Blanton or J.A. Happ but decided on Martinez, a 37-year-old right-hander who last pitched nearly two weeks ago in a game against Houston, a report on the Phillies team Web site said Friday.

Martinez is a three-time winner of the Cy Young Award, which goes each year to the top pitchers in the National and American Leagues.

The Phillies and Colorado Rockies, tied 1-1 in their best-of-five playoff, meet Saturday at Coors Field in Denver. Game time is 9:37 p.m. EDT.

Colorado plans to Jason Hammel (10-8), also a right-hander.

Martinez is 5-1 with an ERA of 3.63 since signing as a free agent with the Phillies in July.

Garcia, Drysdale share Madrid Masters lead

MADRID, Oct. 9 (UPI) -- Sergio Garcia, ranked No. 8 in the world and seeking his ninth European Tour win, shared the halfway lead with David Drysdale Friday in the Madrid Masters.

The Spaniard, following a 5-under-par 67, and Drysdale, who shot 65, were at 13-under 131 at the Centro Nacional course.

Drysdale, of Scotland, is looking for his first title on the tour.

Ireland's Gary Murphy (65), Italy's Emanuele Canonica (65) and Ross McGowan (66) of England were tied for third place at 132 and Jorge Camillo (66) of Spain and Englishmen Danny Willett (67) and Anthony Wall (67) came in at 133.

Garcia said he was glad to hear during his round that golf had been added to the Olympics for 2016 and 2020.

"This is a very special day," Garcia, 29, said. "We've been fighting for a year now to get it in and it feels good. It's going to be an amazing experience for all of us."

Sooners' coach: Bradford 'ready to play'

NORMAN, Okla., Oct. 9 (UPI) -- Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford, who missed three game with an injury, will start Saturday against Baylor, Sooners Coach Bob Stoops said.

"Sam has had a great week of practice and is ready to play," Stoops said "We're obviously excited to have him back."

Bradford, the 2008 Heisman Trophy winner, hasn't played since spraining his right shoulder in Oklahoma's season-opening 14-13 loss to BYU.

Freshman Landry Jones played quarterback in Bradford's absence.

"We remain very pleased with the work Landry Jones did in replacing Sam and our entire program has a lot of confidence in his ability," Stoops said.

Oklahoma is 2-2 and ranked No. 21.
