Nadal, Djokovic in China Open semifinals

BEIJING, Oct. 9 (UPI) -- No. 1-seeded Rafael Nadal beat former world No. 1 Marat Safin and Novak Djokovic downed Spaniard Fernando Verdasco Friday to reach the China Open semifinals.

Nadal, 23, broke Safin's serve in four of eight tries, defeating the big Russian 6-3, 6-1 in just 1 hour 17 minutes on the hard courts at Beijing's Olympic Green Tennis Center.

Nadal improved to 2-0 lifetime against Safin, who is expected to retire from the ATP World Tour at the end of the season. The Spaniard will play No. 8-seeded Marin Cilic of Croatia in a semifinal match Saturday. Cilic bested Nikolay Davydenko of Russia 6-4, 6-4 to reach the semis.

Djokovic, the second-seed, downed Verdasco 6-3, 1-6, 6-1 and will meet French Open runner-up and sixth-seeded Robin Soderling, who defeated Ivan Ljubicic 7-6 (7-3), 6-4 Friday.

The China Open champion will earn $500,000 Sunday.
