Kuznetsova reaches semis, Dementieva falls

BEIJING, Oct. 9 (UPI) -- Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia won in straight sets but countrywoman Elena Dementieva was upset Friday in the quarterfinals of the China Open in Beijing.

The sixth-seeded Kuznetsova, this year's French Open champion, ousted another Russian, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, 6-3, 6-3.

Agnieszka Radwanska, the 12th seed from Poland, knocked off the fourth-seeded Dementieva 7-5, 6-3.

Kuznetsova will next go against No. 13 Nadia Petrova, who came from behind to defeat Peng Shuai of China 6-7 (5-7), 6-3, 6-2.

Radwanska's semifinal foe will be 14th-seeded Marion Bartoli of France, another comeback winner. Bartoli rallied for a 3-6, 7-5, 6-2 decision over Russian Vera Zvonareva, the No. 7 seed.

Kuznetsova was runnerup in last year's Beijing event, losing to Serb Jelena Jankovic in the championship match.
