Report: Pittsburgh named top sports city

PITTSBURGH, Oct. 8 (UPI) -- The Sporting News magazine has voted Pittsburgh, home of the Super Bowl and Stanley Cup champions, America's "Best Sports City."

In its 16th annual survey, the Steel City topped the list of 399 top sports cities and towns across the United States and Canada.

Each city's number of teams, fan fervor and regular-season won-loss records are among factors included in the rankings.

Pittsburgh is featured on the cover of TSN's latest issue.

The Pittsburgh Steelers won Super Bowl XLIII and the Penguins won the NHL's Stanley Cup last season.

"This was a pretty easy one for us this year, given the two championships," Sporting News Publisher Ed Baker told the Tribune-Review after giving Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl a Tiffany glass trophy and a gold tie, symbolic of the winning city.

"It's a great day in Pittsburgh and a great day for (Pittsburgh) sports fans," Ravenstahl said. "Hopefully we're back here again the same time next year."
