SHANGHAI, Oct. 8 (UPI) -- World No. 3-ranked Andy Murray was advised to rest his injured wrist and has withdrawn from next week's ATP masters tournament in Shanghai.
The injury to Murray's left wrist -- he's right-handed but uses a two-handed backhand -- was first noticed prior to the U.S. Open. Murray played in that major tournament, losing in the fourth round, but his only competition since has been in Davis Cup play.
After examinations this week doctors told Murray he should rest the injury for an additional 2-3 weeks. A statement on Murray's Web site said he was looking to return for the Valencia Open, which begins Nov. 2 in Spain.
"I apologize for the inconvenience that my withdrawal may cause but I trust you understand, the situation is beyond my control and I would much rather participate in the tournament than be in the current position regarding my health," Murray said in a statement to Shanghai tournament organizers.
Murray has won five times on the ATP tour this year and was ranked No. 2 in the world for three weeks in August before Rafael Nadal moved past him again.
