TOKYO, Oct. 7 (UPI) -- Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Richard Gasquet each won in straight sets Wednesday, setting up a second-round match at the $1.2 million Japan Open.
Tsonga, seeded second, had 10 aces and dropped just one game on serve in beating Mischa Zverev 6-4, 6-3. Gasquet posted a very clean 6-3, 6-2 win over Philipp Petzschner. Gasquet didn't face a break point and had no double faults while winning 70 percent of the points on serve.
The second round of the tournament also got under way Wednesday with No. 4-seeded Gail Monfils taking a 7-6 (7-5) 6-3 victory over Marco Chiudinelli and seventh-seeded Stanislas Wawrinka topping Simon Greul 6-3, 6-2. Monfils and Wawrinka will be paired against each other in Friday's quarterfinals.
Other first-round matches Wednesday saw Ernests Gulbis upset sixth-seeded Radek Stepanek 6-4, 6-4; Mikhail Youzhny beat Thomaz Bellucci 6-2, 6-3; Andreas Beck slip by Rainer Schuettler 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (7-3); and Juan Monaco advance when Guillermo Garcia-Lopez retired with an injury with Monaco ahead 5-0 in the first set.
