Mendenhall leads AFC weekly honorees

NEW YORK, Oct. 7 (UPI) -- Pittsburgh running back Rashard Mendenhall was named AFC Offensive Player of the Week Wednesday for the first time in his NFL career.

While subbing for the injured Willie Parker, Mendenhall, in his second season from Illinois, rushed for a career-high 165 yards on 29 carries and scored twice, leading the Steelers to a 38-28 win over the San Diego Chargers.

He added 26 receiving and became the sixth Steeler to rush for at least 165 yards and two touchdowns in the same game since 1970.

Mendenhall had gained just 45 yards this season before Sunday.

He was joined in the AFC by Denver cornerback Champ Bailey (defense) and Houston kick returner Jacoby Jones (special teams).

Bailey amassed eight tackles, one interception and four passes defensed in a 17-10 win by the Broncos over the Dallas Cowboys.

Jones had a 95-yard kick return-touchdown in a 29-6 win over Oakland.
