RALEIGH, N.C., Oct. 6 (UPI) -- Sergei Samsonov scored the game- winner in the shootout Tuesday to give the Carolina Hurricanes a 2-1 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Jussi Jokinen scored in regulation for Carolina, which got its first victory of 2009-10 after losing its first two games of the season. Cam Ward made 29 saves in the win.

Ryan Malone scored the lone goal for the Lightning, who lost their season opener on Saturday at Atlanta. Tampa Bay plays its first home game Thursday against New Jersey.

Mike Smith finished with 27 saves in the losing effort.

The game went into overtime, but despite a power play for Carolina, neither team scored in that period.
