
WASHINGTON, Oct. 4 (UPI) -- Alexander Semin had two goals and one assist Saturday to pace the Washington Capitals in a 6-4 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Alex Ovechkin had a goal and two assists for the reigning Southeast Division champion Capitals, who were coming off a season-opening 4-1 victory over Boston Thursday.
Brendan Morrison and Brooks Laicheach had a goal and an assist and Mike Knuble a goal, while Capitals' goalie Simeon Varlamov had 27 saves.
Alexei Ponikarovsky and Mikhail Grabovski each had a goal and an assist for the Maple Leafs.
Niiklas Hagman and Lee Stempniak also scored once.
Goalkeeper Vesa Toskala allowed three goals on only eight shots in the first period before being pulled in favor of Jonas Gustavsson, who turned aside 16-of-19 shots the rest of the way.
