DETROIT, Oct. 4 (UPI) -- Detroit beat the Chicago White Sox 5-3 Sunday and will go against the Minnesota Twins in a one-game playoff for the American League Central Division title.
The Twins, who had trailed the Tigers by as much as seven games in early September, caught them and the playoff was set up when they followed Detroit's win with a 13-4 trouncing of the Kansas City Royals.
Minnesota and Detroit will clash at 5 p.m. Tuesday in the Metrodome in Minneapolis, with the winner going on to meet the New York Yankees in the post-season playoffs.
Detroit starter and winner Justin Verlander (19-9) carried a two-hit shutout into the top of the eighth, but Chicago scored three times to make the contest interesting.
Ryan Raburn swatted two home runs and drove in three runs and Magglio Ordonex hit a solo shot for the Tigers.
Brent Lillibridge led Chicago with two hits and one RBI.
The losing pitcher was starter John Danks (13-11).
