Tommie Harris' wife dies

BOSTON, Oct. 3 (UPI) -- Marc Savard had a goal and two assists Saturday to lead the Boston Bruins to a 7-2 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes.
Michael Ryder, Blake Wheeler, Marco Sturm, Dennis Wideman, Matt Hunwick and Shawn Thornton also scored for the Bruins. Tim Thomas blocked 25 of 27 shots to get the win.
Walker and Eric Staal scored for the Hurricanes, who were shut out at home by Philadelphia Friday to begin the 2009-10 campaign. Cam Ward was lifted after allowing four goals on 28 shots. Michael Leighton allowed three goals on 14 shots the rest of the way.
The Bruins built a three-goal lead in the first period.
