CARSON, Calif., Oct. 3 (UPI) -- Landon Donovan scored on a breakaway in the 42nd minute Friday and Los Angeles made the goal stand up for a 1-0 victory over Chicago.

Los Angeles moved into first place in the Western Conference and will clinch a playoff berth if D.C. United loses Saturday to Chivas USA.

Donovan broke free on a counterattack and chipped the ball over goaltender Jon Busch for the game's only goal.

Chicago, in second place in the East, remained five points behind conference leader Columbus, the only team in MLS to have wrapped up a post-season spot.
