OAKLAND, Calif., Oct. 3 (UPI) -- Jered Weaver allowed three hits in a five-inning stint while warming up for the playoffs Friday and the Los Angeles Angels held on to defeat Oakland 5-2.
The Angels took a shutout into the ninth before Kurt Suzuki and Daric Barton singled in runs. Oakland brought the tying run to the plate before Brian Fuentes retired the last two batters for his 47th save.
Weaver (16-8), making his last appearance before the Angels take on the New York Yankees in the opening round of the playoffs next week, struck out five and did not walk a batter.
The Angels managed only five runs off their 13 hits. Mike Napoli doubled home the first Los Angeles run in the second and Kendry Morales stole home later in the inning.
A homer by Juan Rivera in the fourth made it 3-0. Torri Hunter singled in a run in the fifth and Gary Matthews had an RBI base hit in the eighth.
Gio Gonzalez (6-7) gave up four of the runs on eight hits in six innings to take the loss.
