TIMONIUM, Md., Oct. 2 (UPI) -- Tom Watson's 2-under-par 68 Friday gave him a two-stroke lead after 36 holes at the Champions Tour's Senior Players Championship in Timonium, Md.

The first-round leader was steady Friday on the East Course at the Baltimore Country Club, making two birdies and 16 pars, with his best shot being a 50-foot birdie putt at the par-4 13th hole.

His 6-under 134 total leads Jay Haas (70), Craig Stadler (65), Bob Tway (68) and Mark Wiebe (67), all tied for second place at the halfway point.

"I enjoy competing," Watson said. "That's why I'm out here ... to hit the proper shot when the chips are down."

John Cook (68), Bernhard Langer (65) and Loren Roberts (67) all are 3-under 137 and share sixth.
