RALEIGH, N.C., Oct. 2 (UPI) -- Ray Emery produced the first shutout of the young NHL season Friday, making 28 saves in leading Philadelphia to a 2-0 blanking of Carolina.
Emery was released by Ottawa two years ago and wound up playing in a Russian league last season when he got no NHL offers.
This is his sixth NHL season -- he spent the previous five with Ottawa -- and the shutout marked the ninth of his career.
Philadelphia's goals by Jeff Carter and Mike Richards came 22 seconds apart during the first minute of the second period.
Both were power-play goals, coming while Sergei Samsonov was serving a double-minor penalty for high sticking.
The teams were assessed a combined 34 penalty minutes in the first period, half of them served by Carolina's Tim Gleason. He got five minutes for fighting, two minutes for instigating the fight and a 10-minute misconduct penalty.
