CINCINNATI, Oct. 2 (UPI) -- Andy LaRoche drove in two runs and Daniel McCutchen won for the first time in the majors Friday in Pittsburgh's 3-1 victory over Cincinnati.
The win, Pittsburgh's fifth in six outings, ensured the Pirates would avoid a 100-loss season.
LaRoche had a two-run single in the third to break a scoreless tie and Lastings Milledge hit a solo homer in the fourth.
McCutchen (1-2), making his sixth start in the major leagues, allowed a run on four hits with five strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings. He also scored on LaRoche's third-inning single.
Matt Capps allowed a one-out double in the ninth, but picked up his 27th save.
The loss was charged to Justin Lehr (5-3), who surrendered three runs on four hits in six innings.
