SAN DIEGO, Oct. 1 (UPI) -- Clayton Richard limited Los Angeles to a hit in seven innings Wednesday and San Diego prevented the Dodgers from winning a division title with a 5-0 victory.
The Los Angeles lead in the National League West was reduced to 2 1/2 games over Colorado -- which moved to the edge of clinching no worse than the wild-card berth by defeating Milwaukee.
Los Angeles can clinch the division title with one more win. If LA and Colorado tie for the top spot in the division both will make the playoffs but the Dodgers will be the division champs because they won the head-to-head season series against Colorado.
The Rockies can win the NL West if they win their last four games and the Dodgers lose their last three, in which case the Dodgers would get the wild-card slot.
The Rockies host Milwaukee Thursday while the Dodgers are idle, and then Colorado goes to Los Angeles for the final three games of the season.
The only hit allowed by Richard Wednesday was a two-out single by Matt Kemp in the first. Richard (9-5) walked three and struck out two over seven innings.
Mike Adams and Luke Gregerson completed the one-hitter.
Kevin Kouzmanoff provided the bulk of the offense with a three-run homer in the third.
Jon Garland (11-13) took the loss, surrendering four runs on seven hits in 3 1/3 innings.
