WASHINGTON, Sept. 30 (UPI) -- Justin Maxwell's two-out, two-strike grand slam in the bottom of the ninth Wednesday led the Washington Nationals to a 7-4 win over the New York Mets.
The game-winning blast off Mets closer and losing pitcher Francisco Rodriguez (3-6) was Maxwell's second grand slam this season. It followed an infield single by Alberto Gonzalez, a pinch-hit single by Mike Morse, a walk to Elijah Dukes that loaded the bases and a walk to Adam Dunn that drove in a run.
Ryan Zimmerman hit a solo homer. Gonzalez hit a sacrifice fly and Dukes had two hits for the Nationals, whose victory came in their final home contest in 2009.
The winner was Ron Villone (5-6).
Omir Santos led New York with two hits and two RBI. Fernando Tatis and Jeff Francoeur had two hits and one RBI apiece for the Mets, who lost six of nine at Nationals Park this season, but won the season series 10-8.
