TOKYO, Sept. 29 (UPI) -- No. 3-seeded Elena Dementieva was defeated Tuesday at Tokyo's $2 million Pan Pacific Open, which has lost its top six seeds in second-round play.
Top seeds Dinara Safina and Venus Williams were among upset victims in Monday's play while Dementieva, No. 4-seeded Carolina Wozniacki and sixth-seeded Vera Zvonareva were out of the draw by the end of play Tuesday.
Dementieva was defeated 6-2, 6-7 (3-7), 6-1 by qualifier Kateryna Bondarenko. She hurt her chances with 11 double faults and Bondarenko cashed in eight service breaks.
Wozniacki was trailing Aleksandra Wozniak 0-5 in the first set when she retired due to illness and Zvonareva was beaten 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 by Alisa Kleybanova.
