DETROIT, Sept. 29 (UPI) -- Delmon Young's sacrifice fly in the 10th Tuesday gave Minnesota a 3-2 win over Detroit that pulled the Twins within one game of the AL Central-leading Tigers.
The win came in the first game of a four-game series as part of a double-header made necessary because of a rain-out Monday night.
Denard Span led off the extra inning with a single and made his way to third on consecutive wild pitches by Brandon Lyon (6-5). He came home on an Orlando Cabrera single to make it 2-1. Joe Mauer followed with a walk and Michael Cuddyer loaded the bases on an intentional walk after Carlos Gomez laid down a sacrifice bunt
Young then lofted a fly ball to center, scoring Cabrera for a 3-1 lead.
Twins closer Joe Nathan surrendered a homer to Curtis Granderson in the bottom of the inning but then got Placido Polanco and Ryan Raburn to line out and Miguel Cabrera to ground out for his club record-tying 45th save this season.
Jon Rauch (4-1) got the win, throwing 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief. Nick Blackburn started for Minnesota, giving up one run on six hits and a walk in seven innings.
Minnesota's first run came when Matt Tolbert doubled, went to third on a Nick Punto sacrifice bunt and came home on a sacrifice fly by Span.
Ramon Santiago drove in Detroit's other run. Tigers starter Rick Porcello went 6 1/3 innings, giving up one run on seven hits and a walk.
The Tigers have lost three of their last four games on the heels of winning four straight.
