LOS ANGELES, Sept. 29 (UPI) -- Doctors say they expect a full recovery for University of Southern California running back Stafon Johnson after a weightlifting accident.
Dr. Gordon Hinika, trauma medical director at California Hospital Medical Center, said Johnson underwent more than seven hours of emergency surgery Monday after a weight bar slipped out of his hand and fell onto his throat. Hinika said that while it is unlikely Johnson will play again this season, he expected the running back to make a full recovery, KTLA-TV, Los Angeles, reported.
The USC player was reportedly listed in critical but stable condition.
"It was an unfortunate accident and Stafon is getting great care right now," coach USC Pete Carroll told reporters, saying the weightlifting bar "hit him with a lot of force and it hurt him. No broken bones as far as I understand, but he's got some damage in there somewhere, and they're working it out, trying to figure out what it is. It is serious."
KTLA said the 5-foot-11, 210-pound Johnson is the Trojans' second-leading rusher with 32 carries for 157 yards this year, and is leading the team with five touchdowns.
