Mickelson gets title, Woods collects $10M

ATLANTA, Sept. 27 (UPI) -- Phil Mickelson came from behind Sunday to win Tour Championship and Tiger Woods, who was second, got a $10 million prize for winning the FedEx Cup points race.

Mickelson shot a 5-under-par 65 for 9-under 271 and a three-shot spread over Woods, a six-time winner in 2009 who closed with a 70, good enough for his second FedEx Cup win in three years.

The title was Mickelson's 37th on the PGA Tour and third this year. Mickelson collected $4.35 million -- $1.35 for the tournament and $3 million for placing second in the FedEx standings.

"It really feels great to have won," Mickelson said. "Even though I didn't win the FedEx Cup, I won the last event of the year. I feel great about my game."

Mickelson's wife and mother were diagnosed with breast cancer this year and he spent some time away from the tour.

"This certainly makes it a much better year than it was," Mickelson said. "I look at it as a fortunate year. Long-term, both Amy and my mom are going to be great."

Sean O'Hair (68) finished third at 275. Third-round leader Kenny Perry slipped to a 74 and tied for fourth at 276 with Padraig Harrington (69).

Mickelson was four behind Perry at the beginning of the final round.

Referring to the FedEx Cup scenario, Woods said: "The whole idea is to be consistent the entire season and position yourself as best you possibly can for the playoffs. I played well. When I didn't win, I was in the top 10 and kept accumulating points. In the playoffs, I played pretty good."

Johnson wins Sprint Cup race at Dover

DOVER, Del., Sept. 27 (UPI) -- Jimmie Johnson was dominant Sunday on the way to winning the Sprint Cup AAA 400 auto race at the Dover International Speedway.

Johnson led the race in 271 of its 400 laps in his quest to become the points champion a record fourth straight time. He beat Hendrick Motorsports teammate Mark Martin, the points leader, to the checkered flag by nearly two seconds.

"It was just an awesome race car and an awesome day," Johnson said. "I'm just so happy to go out and get maximum points today. That's what we needed to do."

Johnson came within 10 points of Martin in the season-ending "Race for the Chase," which decides the champion.

Daytona 500 winner Matt Kenseth, who failed to make the Chase for the first time this year, finished third, with title contenders Juan Pablo Montoya and Kurt Busch completing the top-five finishers.

Tim Tebow out of hospital, 'doing fine'

LEXINGTON, Ky., Sept. 27 (UPI) -- Florida quarterback Tim Tebow, who suffered a concussion in the Gators' 41-7 win over Kentucky, is out of the hospital and "doing fine," the school said.

Tebow was kept overnight at Kentucky Chandler Medical Center in Lexington, Ky., for precautionary reasons. The 2007 Heisman Trophy-winner was hurt as he was being sacked in the third quarter of the game Saturday, when his head struck the knee of teammate Marcus Gilbert.

Tebow was carted off the field and driven by ambulance to the medical center.

"Tim is doing fine this morning," Florida Coach Urban Meyer said Sunday. "His CT scans came back and indicated that Tim suffered a concussion. Our medical and athletic training staff will continue to monitor him to determine how much rest and recovery he needs."

Meyer said there would be updates during the week on Tebow's status.

Tebow ran for 123 yards and two touchdowns and passed for 103 yards and a score before he left the game. Sophomore John Brantley replaced him at quarterback.

The Gators (4-0, 2-0 SEC) have next week off. Their next game is at LSU Oct. 10.

Date Krumm wins day before 39th birthday

SEOUL, Sept. 27 (UPI) -- Kimiko Date Krumm, who is on a pro tour comeback, won the Korea Open Sunday on the day before her 39th birthday, defeating Anabel Medina Garrigues.

Date Krumm's winning score was 6-3, 6-3.

The Japanese player, who won seven WTA titles in the 1990s and then retired, returned to the tour last year.

Date Krumm, who turned 39 Monday, became the second-oldest woman in the modern era to win a WTA singles event. Only Billie Jean King, who won a tournament in 1983, was older, at 39 years, seven months and 23 days.

"For the past year, I didn't really know if I could really compete well on the WTA Tour, but it looks OK now," Date Krumm said. "I could play my own game exactly as I wanted to. I'll have to be careful not to get any injuries, but I think I'll be able to keep playing for a couple of years."
