DENVER, Sept. 25 (UPI) -- RBI singles by Nick Hundley and Tony Gwynn completed a San Diego rally in the eighth inning Thursday and gave the Padres a 5-4 win over Colorado.
The Rockies let an early 3-0 lead get away and fell six games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers in the race for the National League West title.
Colorado still leads both Atlanta and San Francisco by 3 1/2 games in the NL wild-card chase.
Troy Tulowitzki staked Colorado to its early lead with a three-run homer in the first, but the Padres fought back to tie it through seven innings. Chase Headley opened the eighth with a single off Joe Beimel (1-6) and moved to second on a sacrifice by Will Venable.
Oscar Salazar grounded out to second, bringing Beimel to the brink of getting out of the inning. Hundley, however, singled to center to score Headley with the go-ahead run. Hundley stole second and scored an insurance run on Gwynn's base hit.
That extra run proved vital when Colorado's Ian Stewart hit a solo homer in the bottom of the eighth.
Adam Russell (3-1) picked up the victory by retiring the final batter in the seventh.
Luke Gregerson worked the final 1 2/3 innings to collect the first save of his major league career.
