CHICAGO, Sept. 25 (UPI) -- Jake Peavy struck out eight over seven innings Friday and combined with three relievers to bring the Chicago White Sox a 2-0 win over Detroit.
The loss by the Tigers, combined with a Minnesota victory over Kansas City, cut Detroit's lead over the Twins to two games in the American League Central.
The Tigers and Twins will play four times in Detroit beginning next Monday.
Chicago acquired Peavy (8-6) from San Diego in July in hopes he could ignite a late rush to the division title. Instead, the White Sox are one loss away from elimination from playoff contention.
Peavy (8-6), however, slowed Detroit's pennant run by allowing six hits while throwing 95 pitches. Randy Williams and Octavio Dotel combined to work a perfect eighth and Matt Thornton came on in the ninth to pick up his second save.
The White Sox managed only two hits in the game, but one of them was a two-run homer from Gordon Beckman in the sixth.
Eddie Bonine (0-1), in only his third start of the season, was the hard-luck loser. He allowed two runs on two hits in six innings.
