Tommie Harris' wife dies

OAKLAND, Calif., Sept. 23 (UPI) -- Trevor Cahill held Texas to one run and led the Oakland Athletics to a 9-1 victory over the Rangers Tuesday.
Cahill (10-12) limited the Rangers to six hits in 5 2/3 innings and knocked them down to seven games in back of Boston in the American League wild-card hunt. Texas' loss also allowed the New York Yankees to clinch a berth in the AL playoffs.
Kurt Suzuki and Daric Barton each had two RBI for the A's, who have won eight of their last nine games.
Oakland scored five runs in the seventh inning to put the game away.
David Murphy had two hits and drove in the only Texas run.
Starter Brandon McCarthy (7-4) took the loss after giving up three runs -- two earned -- on five hits over 5 1/3 innings.
