NEW YORK, Sept. 23 (UPI) -- Adam LaRoche contributed three hits and two RBI Wednesday to help carry the Atlanta Braves to a 5-2 decision over the New York Mets.
The win came just hours after Atlanta Manager Bobby Cox announced he would retire following next season. Cox is fourth on the all-time victory list among major league managers.
LaRoche doubled home the first of three Atlanta runs in the second, and then delivered an RBI infield single in the third.
The Braves began Wednesday's action trailing National League wild-card leader Colorado by five games.
The win went to Tim Hudson (2-1), who allowed two runs on nine hits in six innings. Rafael Soriano pitched the ninth for his 26th save.
Mike Pelfrey (10-12) gave up four runs, three of them earned, on nine hits in six innings to take the loss.
Atlanta swept the Mets in a three-game series for the second time this month.
