MIAMI, Sept. 22 (UPI) -- Miami Heat Coach Erik Spoelstra has had his contract extended, The Miami Herald reported Tuesday.
The newspaper said while the NBA team didn't disclosed the terms, the deal was believed to be for one more year. Spoelstra originally was given a three-year contract when hired in April 2008.
He helped the Heat to a 43-39 record and a playoff berth last season after the team went 15-67 the year before. At 38, he is the youngest head coach in the NBA.
Spoelstra's contract was enhanced even though all employees in Miami's basketball operations accepted voluntary pay cuts to avoid layoffs.
Meanwhile, Spoelstra confirmed second-year forward Michael Beasley left a Houston area rehabilitation facility Sunday and was at American Airlines Arena Monday working out informally with teammates.
"He's ready to go. He's excited," Spoelstra told the Herald. "We're 100 percent behind him. We've invested in him not only financially but emotionally."
Beasley is in the league's substance-abuse program after a marijuana incident last summer. He averaged 13.9 points and 5.4 rebounds as a rookie.
Miami opens training camp Sept. 29.
