ST. LOUIS, Sept. 21 (UPI) -- Jake Fox broke a 3-3 tie with a two-run home run in the 11th inning Sunday and the Chicago Cubs went on to be St. Louis 6-3 and avoid a three-game sweep.
Even with the win, the Cubs are eight games back of the Colorado Rockies in the NL wild-card chase. The Cardinals' magic number remained at four to win the NL Central.
After Andres Blanco reached on a single with one out in the 11th, Fox touched losing pitcher Mitchell Boggs (2-3) for the game-winning home run. The Cubs wrapped up the scoring when Aramis Ramirez scored on a bases-loaded wild pitch by Brad Thompson.
Albert Pujols knocked in his 128th RBI of the season, tying him with Prince Fielder of the Brewers for the major league RBI lead.
Esmailin Caridad (1-0) got the win, pitching 1 2/3 innings in relief, and Carlos Marmol got his 14th save of the season for Chicago.
Cardinals' starter Adam Wainwright struck out 10 in seven innings, holding the Cubs to three runs on five hits, but failed in his bid to become the first 19-game winner in Major League Baseball this season.
Cubs' starter Carlos Zambrano allowed two runs on five hits in six innings.
