Mick Fannings wins Trestles surf tourney

HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif., Sept. 20 (UPI) -- Australian Mick Fanning captured pro surfing's biggest prize this weekend by winning the $105,000 Hurley Pro Trestles in Southern California.

Fanning knocked off American Dane Reynolds in the finals at the Lower Trestles break in Huntington Beach and jumped from seventh to second place in the Association of Surfing Professionals rankings behind fellow Aussie Joel Parkinson.

Fanning posted impressive single-wave scores of 9.70 and 9.67 to nail down the victory by a final score of 17.40 to 13.10. He had moved into the final by beating veteran Kelly Slater in their semi-final heat.

The finals took place Saturday in respectable conditions following three consecutive lay days due to an overly placid Pacific.

The ASP World Tour moves on to Europe and the Quicksilver Pro France in Hossegor Sept. 23-Oct. 4.
