Knee injury ends season of QB Matt Grothe

TAMPA, Fla., Sept. 20 (UPI) -- South Florida senior quarterback Matt Grothe will not play again in 2009 because of a torn left knee ligament.

The Lakeland, Fla., native suffered the injury in Saturday's 59-0 win over Charleston Southern.

No surgery date was given, but because Grothe was a red-shirt freshman in 2006, his college career likely is over.

"Obviously, I am disappointed because you never think this could happen to you," he said Sunday on the school's Web site. "It's a team game and I am still going to be very involved with my teammates and the coaches. I am going to do everything I can to help the Bulls continue to win."

The former Big East Conference Rookie of the Year rushed for 2,206 yards, scoring 23 touchdowns, and passed for 8,669 yards with 52 touchdowns in 42 career games, both school records.

He had started 41 straight games.
