AUSTIN, Texas, Sept. 20 (UPI) -- Colt McCoy and the second-ranked Texas Longhorns avenged their only 2008 loss Saturday with a 34-24 victory over Texas Tech.
But McCoy passed for only 200 yards and one touchdown on 24-of-34 completions and threw two interceptions. Texas (3-0, 1-0 Big 12) had its national championship bid ruined last season when Texas Tech scored on a last-second touchdown.
Tre' Newton rushed for 87 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries for Texas. Jordan Shipley had only 69 yards on 11 receptions, but his 46-yard punt return midway through the opening quarter was the only touchdown in a low-scoring first half.
Taylor Potts completed 45-of-62 passes for 417 yards and three TDs for Texas Tech (2-1, 0-1). But Potts was intercepted once and lost a fumble. Lyle Leong caught six passes for 82 yards and two TDs. Potts had little help from the Red Raiders' running game, which netted only 30 yards.
