Safarova, Czink to meet in Quebec final

QUEBEC CITY, Sept. 19 (UPI) -- Lucie Safarova of the Czech Republic and Melinda Czink of Hungary will meet Sunday in the final of the women's Bell Challenge.

The fourth-seeded Safarova beat Germany's Julia Goerges 6-3, 6-2 and Czink, seeded fifth, beat Canadian Aleksandra Wozniak 6-3, 6-3 in Saturday's semifinals.

It will be Safarova's first final of 2009. She had been a quarterfinal loser four times previously this year. The 22-year-old Safarova is 4-2 all-time in WTA Tour finals, last winning in 2008.

This will be the second career WTA final for Czink, who got her only tour victory in 2005 at Canberra.


Smith, Rice lead Hall of Fame nominees

CANTON, Ohio, Sept. 19 (UPI) -- Emmitt Smith and Jerry Rice headline the nominees for the 2010 NFL Hall of Fame class announced Saturday in Canton, Ohio.

Smith and Rice, both Super Bowl MVPs, were eligible for the first time, as were wide receiver Tim Brown, quarterback Rich Gannon, running back Eddie George, defensive back Aeneas Williams and place-kicker Gary Anderson.

They were among 131 players, coaches and contributors on the list of nominees.

Smith, the NFL's all-time leading rusher, gained 18,355 yards on an all-time high 4,409 attempts. He was the 17th overall pick by the Cowboys in the 1990 NFL draft and became the first player in league history to rush for 1,400 yards in five straight seasons and the first with 10,000 career rushing yards and 400 career receptions. He scored 164 career rushing touchdowns.

Rice is the NFL's all-time leading receiver with 22,895 receiving yards on 1,549 catches with 197 touchdown receptions in 20 seasons.


Price, Haas share senior lead in Carolina

CONOVER, N.C., Sept. 19 (UPI) -- Nick Price shot a 5-under-par 67 Saturday to move into a tie with Jay Haas for the 36-hole lead in the seniors' Greater Hickory Classic.

The leaders were at 11-under 133 with first-round leader Haas, who opened with a 62, getting a 1-under 71 in the second round.

Andy Bean and Russ Cochran both had 68s Saturday to move into a tie for third at 135 with Gil Morgan (70). Fred Funk (67) is one of nine players at 8-under 136.

Na Yeon Choi leads women's Samsung World

LA JOLLA, Calif., Sept. 19 (UPI) -- South Korea's Na Yeon Choi shot a 9-under-par 63 Saturday for a two-stroke lead at the women's Samsung World Championship.

Choi, 21, had a 6-under 30 on the front nine and wound up 54 holes at 15-under 201.

She had the best round of the day by seven shots and was the only player to break 70 until both of those in the final pairing, Jiyai Shin and Ai Miyazato, posted 68s. Shin lost the lead for the first time in three rounds, finishing two shots behind at 13-under 203. Miyazato was another stroke back at 12-under 204.

Defending champion Paula Creamer (70) and two-time Samsung winner Lorena Ochoa (72) trailed Choi by seven shots at 208.

Choi finished one shot off tying the tournament scoring record of 62, set by Grace Park, and Park's three-round total of 200 in 2004.
