SAN JOSE, Calif., Sept. 19 (UPI) -- Conor Casey scored on a penalty kick in extra time Friday, allowing Colorado to escape with a 1-1 tie against San Jose.

Ryan Johnson gave San Jose the lead in the eighth minute and the Earthquakes maintained the advantage all the way until the game's final seconds.

Brandon McDonald, who assisted on Johnson's goal, was carded for arguing with the referee, giving Casey a chance to deadlock the game.

Colorado moved into a tie with Seattle for third place in the Western Conference. San Jose, winners just five times in 23 tries this season, is in last place.
