BALTIMORE, Sept. 18 (UPI) -- Wade Davis threw a complete-game shutout for his first major league victory Thursday, bringing Tampa Bay a 3-0 victory over Baltimore.
The four-hit performance by Davis provided a bright spot in an otherwise dismal late-year slump that had seen the Rays lose 13 of 14 games.
Davis (1-0), who spent most of the season with Class AAA Durham, threw seven innings in his major league debut last week. He did not figure in the decision in that game, then gave up eight runs in just 2 2/3 innings in a loss to Boston.
In his third big league start, however, he walked two and struck out 10 while throwing 124 pitches. Davis loaded the bases with nobody out in the first, but escaped that jam and went on to retire 13 batters in a row.
The Tampa Bay scores came on an RBI single by Carl Crawford in the third, a successful squeeze bunt by Gabe Kapler in the fourth and a run-scoring single by Evan Longoria in the ninth.
Mark Hendrickson (5-5) took the loss, allowing two runs on five hits in 3 1/3 innings. The Orioles, who had won two straight, used seven pitchers in the game.
