GUANGZHOU, China, Sept. 17 (UPI) -- Top-seeded Anabel Medina Garrigues was knocked out in three sets Thursday in the second round of the Guangzhou Women's Open tennis tournament in China.
Medina Garrigues, ranked 23rd in the world, took the first set but was then staggered by Anastasija Sevastova 3-6, 6-3, 6-1. The win marked the second time in her career that Sevastova, ranked No. 95, has won twice in the same tournament.
Sevastova advanced to a quarterfinal matchup Friday with No. 8-seeded Alberta Brianti.
No. 3-seeded Peng Shuai is the highest remaining seeded player remaining in the tournament. She moved into the quarterfinals with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Chanelle Scheepers. Peng recorded five breaks in Scheepers' eight service games.
Also Thursday, Yung-Jan Chan stopped No. 9-seeded Maria Elena Camerin 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (7-2) and Olga Savchuk beat Su-Wei Hsieh 6-4, 6-4.
In addition to the Brianti-Sevastova pairing Friday, Peng will go against Alexandra Panova; Chan is paired with No. 5-seeded Shahar Peer and Savchuk is to play seventh-seeded Ayumi Morita.
