NFL fines Jets for rules violation

NEW YORK, Sept. 16 (UPI) -- The NFL hit the New York Jets with fines totaling $125,000 Wednesday for violating its rules pertaining to reports about player injuries last season.

The matter surrounds the team's failure to report the torn biceps tendon of former Jets quarterback Brett Favre in the last month of the 2008 season.

The team was fined $75,000, while former coach Eric Mangini and team president Mike Tannenbaum received fines of $25,000 apiece.

Mangini moved on to a similar job with the Cleveland Browns after he was fired, and Favre ended a brief retirement to sign with Minnesota Vikings.

While speaking to the New York Daily News Wednesday, Tannenbaum shouldered the blame, saying the Jets should have put listed Favre "probable" on their weekly injury report.

Despite the injury, Favre ran his consecutive games streak to 270, and in the off-season, underwent arthroscopic surgery to repair his injured throwing shoulder.
