NEW YORK, Sept. 16 (UPI) -- New Orleans quarterback Drew Brees has been named NFC Offensive Player of the Week.

The former Purdue standout threw a career-high six touchdown passes Sunday in the Saints' 45-27 victory over the Detroit Lions.

He completed 26-of-34 passes (76.5 percent) for 358 yards, six touchdowns and one interception, with the touchdown total equaling a franchise record.

Brees became the only player in NFL history to pass for six touchdowns on Kickoff Weekend.

Others earning NFC honors were New York Giants end Justin Tuck (defense) and Philadelphia punt returner Sean Jackson (special teams).

Tuck made two tackles and 1 1/2 sacks in the Giants' 23-17 win over the Washington Redskins.

He is the first Giant to win defensive honors during the Kickoff Weekend since Michael Strahan in 1998.

Jackson scored on an 85-yard punt return in the Eagles' 38-10 rout of the Carolina Panthers.
