Clijsters wins U.S. Open

NEW YORK, Sept. 14 (UPI) -- Kim Clijsters, who entered the U.S. Open as a wild card, won the championship Sunday, topping off a remarkable return to women's tennis after a two-year layoff.

The 26-year-old Belgian defeated rising young star Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark 7-5, 6-3 for her second Grand Slam win and the 35th title of her WTA career.

The match lasted an hour and 33 minutes.

Clijsters, a former world No. 1, had retired from tennis in the spring of 2007 to start a family. She returned to the tour this summer in Cincinnati.

The open was just the third tournament of her comeback.

Among the players Clijsters eliminated en route to the title were defending champion Serena Williams and her sister Venus.

Clijsters also won the U.S. Open in 2005.
