Pittsburgh Steelers Santonio Holmes First Down Reception Against Titans

PITTSBURGH, Sept. 11 (UPI) -- Jeff Reed kicked a 33-yard field goal 4:32 into overtime Thursday, giving Pittsburgh a 13-10 win over Tennessee in the opening game of the NFL's 90th season.

The defending Super Bowl champion Steelers faced a 10-7 deficit before tying it midway through the fourth period on a field goal by Reed.

They then botched an opportunity to win it late in regulation before Ben Roethlisberger drove Pittsburgh 63 yards in 10 plays on the opening possession of the extra period.

Tennessee's Rob Bironas missed a field goal and had another blocked in the first half and neither team could score until Roethlisberger hit Santonio Holmes with a 34-yard touchdown pass with 1:22 remaining in the second quarter.

The Titans promptly drove 72 yards in just three plays and Kerry Collins tied it at halftime by throwing a 14-yard scoring pass to Justin Gage with 48 seconds remaining.

The score remained 7-7 until Bironas connected from 45 yards with 11:03 to play in regulation.

After Pittsburgh tied it with 2:57 to go, the Steelers regained the ball with 1:50 remaining. Roethlisberger hit Hines Ward with a 30-yard pass down to the Tennessee 4-yard line, but Ward fumbled the ball and the Titans recovered to give themselves a chance in overtime.

That chance, however, quickly faded when Pittsburgh won the coin toss to start the extra period. The Steelers never relinquished the ball, coming up with a key play when Roethlisberger hit rookie Mike Wallace with a 22-yard throw to the Tennessee 15.

The Pittsburgh quarterback was 33-of-43 for 363 yards. Collins was 22-of-35 for 244 yards.
