DETROIT, Sept. 11 (UPI) -- Rod Barajas and Randy Ruiz hit home runs in the seventh inning to give Toronto a five-run lead Friday and the Blue Jays held on to down Detroit 6-4.
The Tigers, who began the night with a 5 1/2-game lead over Minnesota at the top of the American League Central, lost their fourth straight.
Toronto took a 3-1 lead into the seventh, which Barajas opened by hitting his 17th home run of the season. Edwin Encarnacion then singled and after Ryan Perry relieved Armando Galarraga, Ruiz delivered a two-run blast.
Detroit responded with three runs in the bottom half of the inning, but Scott Downs and Jason Frasor shut down the Tigers over the final two frames. Frasor needed just eight pitches to throw a perfect ninth and collect his ninth save.
Brian Tallet (7-9) gave up two runs on seven hits in 6 1/3 to get the win. Detroit starter Nate Robertson (1-1) lasted only 3 2/3 innings to take the loss. He surrendered just two runs, but walked five.
