CLEVELAND, Sept. 9 (UPI) -- Chris Davis had a three-run home run and four RBI Tuesday to lead the Texas Rangers to a 10-5 win and a doubleheader sweep over Cleveland.
Davis had three hits as part of an 18- hit attack for the Rangers, who trail the first-place Los Angeles Angels by 4 1/2 games in the AL West, and pulled within two games of Boston in the AL wild-card chase. The Angels beat Seattle 3-2 in 10 innings Tuesday.
Marlon Byrd and Ian Kinsler also had three hits for Texas -- which put together 31 hits in two games against the Indians. The Rangers won the opener 11-9.
In the nightcap, Texas scored four runs in the second inning and went ahead 7-0 in the fourth on an RBI single by Andruw Jones.
The Indians chipped away with a solo home run in the fifth by Kelly Shoppach and a two-run shot in the sixth by Asdrubal Cabrera. A pair of runs in the seventh cut the Texas lead to two, but Davis' home run and two innings of scoreless relief allowed the Rangers to coast home.
Brandon McCarthy (7-2) picked up his second win in as many starts since despite giving up all five Cleveland runs on five hits in 6 2/3 innings.
Aaron Laffey (7-5) took the loss after being rocked for seven runs on 12 hits with one walk and one strikeout in 3 1/3 innings.
