BOSTON, Sept. 9 (UPI) -- A three-run double in the seventh by Victor Martinez put Boston in front Wednesday and the Red Sox produced 15 hits in downing Baltimore 7-5.
Baltimore took a 4-3 lead going into the bottom of the sixth but the Red Sox then tied it on an RBI single by Dustin Pedroia and took the lead on the bases-loaded double by Martinez.
Boston maintained a two-game lead over Texas in the chase for the American League wild-card berth. The Red Sox are nine games behind first-place New York in the AL East with 23 games remaining.
Matt Albers (2-5) came on in the seventh for Baltimore with the score tied and gave up a leadoff single to Kevin Youkilis. Mark Hendrickson relieved Albers, struck out David Ortiz and then gave way to Danys Baez.
Jason Bay greeted Baez with a single and Mike Lowell drew a walk to load the bases. That brought up Martinez, who drove in all three runners by hitting the first pitch from Baez to deep left-center.
Billy Wagner (1-0), the fourth of six Boston pitchers, got the win by working a perfect seventh inning. Jonathan Papelbon gave up two hits and a run in the ninth, but still collected his 35th save.
