OAKLAND ATHLETICS VS DETROIT TIGERS

DETROIT, Sept. 8 (UPI) -- Detroit Tigers pitcher Fernando Rodney has been suspended three games for throwing a ball that hit the press box at Tropicana Field.

Major League Baseball also fined him an undisclosed amount for the incident, which occurred Friday following the last out of the Tigers' 4-3 win over the Tampa Bay Rays.

No one was hit by the throw but it sent members of the media scrambling. Rodney said afterward he was just flipping the ball to fans but others who saw it said it didn't appear to be a friendly toss.

Unless he appeals the ruling, Rodney was to start his suspension Tuesday night at Kansas City.
