WASHINGTON, Sept. 8 (UPI) -- Lucas Glover, Hunter Mahan, Ryo Ishikawa and Adam Scott were captains' choices Tuesday to fill out the United States and International Presidents Cup teams.

Glover, the U.S. Open champion, and Mahan, who was 2-3 in his first Presidents Cup and had a strong showing in last year's Ryder Cup, were considered safe choices by United States captain Fred Couples.

Ishikawa, a Japanese teenager who turns 18 next week has three wins on the Japan tour, and Scott, an Aussie mired in a slump that has caused him to miss 10 of 18 PGA Tour cuts this season, are considered by observers to be a gamble by International captain Greg Norman.

Couples passed over such players as Scott Verplank, Brian Gay and Heath Slocum. Norman skipped Rory Sabbatini, K.J. Choi and Jeev Milkha Singh.

The two 12-player teams will compete Oct. 8-11 at Harding Park in San Francisco.

The rest of the American team includes Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Jim Furyk, Steve Stricker, Kenny Perry, Zach Johnson, Stewart Cink, Sean O'Hair, Anthony Kim and Leonard. The International team has Geoff Ogilvy, Vijay Singh, Camilo Villegas, Retief Goosen, Ernie Els, Angel Cabrera, Mike Weir, Robert Allenby, Y.E. Yang and Tim Clark.
